How to Measure for Cabinet Pull-Outs

The useful measurement is the space a loaded pull-out can actually travel through—not the nominal width on a cabinet order.

Start with the opening, not the outside box

Open the door to its normal working position. Measure the narrowest clear width between the face frame, hinges and any center stile. A frameless cabinet can still lose clearance at the hinge. Record the opening near the top and bottom of the proposed pull-out; use the smaller measurement when screening candidates.

Measure clear depth from the inside of the closed door to the first obstruction at the back. Pipes, outlet boxes and a bowed back panel can matter more than the nominal cabinet depth. Photograph the hinge side and the rear of the cabinet with the tape visible.

Separate three different dimensions

  • Cabinet size: useful for identifying the cabinet, but not proof of fit.
  • Minimum opening: the manufacturer’s required clear opening for the complete mechanism.
  • Usable basket size: the space left for the items after slides and brackets are installed.

Do not subtract a generic slide allowance from the opening and assume it works. Compare your measurements with the installation drawing for the exact width and mounting version.

Check the travel and the mounting surface

Mark the full extension on the floor with removable tape. Check nearby handles, an adjacent appliance door and the person standing in the aisle. A pull-out that technically clears the door may still be awkward to use. Check whether the hardware mounts to the cabinet floor, side walls or door; confirm that the actual substrate and fasteners are suitable.

Make a short fit record before ordering

Record opening width, clear depth, available height, hinge intrusion, door swing, mounting surface and the tallest item you plan to store. Include the item’s weight when assessing the manufacturer’s load rating. Do not remove a center stile or drill around services to make a mechanism fit without an appropriate cabinet or installation assessment.

RayArt view: buy the easiest access that fits the cabinet you have. Maximum basket width is not a win if every opening requires moving something else.
