Lighting Built-In Shelves Without Ruining the Design
Start from the normal viewing position. The goal is usually to see the objects and the shelf composition, not the light source.
Use a sightline test
Look at the shelving while standing, seated and approaching from the side. A strip hidden from one angle may be exposed from another. Mock up a proposed position with removable tape and a temporary light before routing a channel. Check glare in glass doors, polished objects and a nearby monitor.
Decide what receives the light
A front position can reveal the faces of displayed objects, while a rear position can emphasize the wall or create silhouettes. Shelves above cast shadows; lighting only the top of a tall unit rarely produces the same result on every shelf. Decide whether each bay needs its own light or whether the architecture should be emphasized instead.
Compare diffuser and profile dimensions with the shelf thickness. A dotless appearance depends on the actual strip, spacing, diffuser and viewing distance; the word “COB” alone does not guarantee the effect in every installation.
Plan the cable path and adjustment
For fixed shelves, coordinate channels and wire routes before finishing. For adjustable shelves, check whether the chosen connection method genuinely allows the shelf to move. Do not create a fixed cable loop that limits the shelf positions or gets trapped behind a book.
Keep power supplies and connectors accessible as instructed. Ask how a failed strip or driver can be replaced without cutting finished woodwork. Follow the lighting manufacturer’s requirements for profiles, heat management, maximum run lengths and compatible controls.
Balance light with the room
Compare the proposed color appearance with nearby fixtures and the actual finish samples. More brightness can flatten a display or reveal every cable; adjustable output may be more useful than maximum output. Confirm dimming compatibility across the complete system.
RayArt view: resolve the visible edge, service access and wiring together. A clean light effect should not require sacrificing the shelf’s proportions or future usefulness.
